How To Become More Emotionally Self-Reliant

articles self-care Jun 29, 2020

There aren't many things you need in this life that others cannot provide for you. When you go to the grocery, you can easily buy fresh produce that others have grown for you. You come home to a house that other people built for you. And then there are things you need to learn that others will gladly teach you.

In truth, we have all become reliant on others for almost everything that we need--from the person who does our laundry to the waiter who delivers our food. But there is one thing that no other person can do for you, and that is to make you feel good or positive about yourself. That is something that only you can do. Though it might be true that the people around you could give you praises about how good you are or how pretty you have become over the years, those affirmations won't make you truly happy.

The only thing that you should be self-dependent on is how you can make yourself feel loved. True happiness comes from the emotional independence you have from others and the emotional reliance you have built from within yourself.

How Do You Teach Yourself To Be Self-Reliant?

Tip 1: Popular opinion doesn't always count

Not everything that people say is true, so you need to choose what to believe in carefully. Avoid conforming to popular opinion because not all that is good for others is good for you. Trust your instincts, and go with your gut. Your ideas, principles, thoughts, and opinions are what truly matters when it comes to deciding what is right for you.

If you follow what you truly feel, you will be able to draw and develop your own conclusions of how things should work. Keeping yourself open to new knowledge and ideas is good, but do not be afraid to speak your mind as well.

Tip 2: No other opinion matters

Nothing and no one else can bring you peace other than yourself. The integrity of your own thinking leads you to the very principles that you believe in. Do not be afraid to fight for what you believe in, for no one else will.

Believing in the things that you do is what makes you the person that you are. No matter how seemingly unpopular your opinion may be, it is the only opinion that matters in the end.

Tip 3: Always try to be yourself

In this day and age, when popular opinion seems to be the ruling voice, it is relatively easy to forget who you are. Imitation appears to be the name of the game, but it shouldn't be the road you take. Instead, you must learn to accept yourself for who you are. Stand by it. Every person has something unique to offer. If you work a bit harder, you can cultivate the gifts that you have and become a better version of who you are.

Tip 4: Deal with your obstacles head-on

Every person goes through life with their own struggles and obstacles. But keep in mind that these challenges are not to stop you from growing. They help you develop your inner strength, which will help you in your future endeavors.

In the process, not only will you grow into a stronger person, but it will help you discover the weaknesses that make you human. Keep your head held high and take on the new challenges that life has to offer. Soon, you will come out more resilient than you've ever been.

Tip 5: Work hard

When you do honorable work, you build the foundations of self-worth. Not only will it bring success, but it promises prosperity and incomparable happiness.

The greatest asset that you can offer the world is your sense of productivity. When you produce results out of the work that you do, you are establishing yourself as a self-reliant person. How does hard work make you feel? If it makes you feel good, then you've earned all the rewards that come from it.

Tip 6: Take advantage of learning opportunities

Never stop updating yourself. Be competitive and teach yourself a new skill or two whenever you can. Learning should never stop, no matter how accomplished or successful your life seems to be. Only those who continue to learn will reap the benefits of their hard work overtime.

Commit to the idea of being a student for life. Take on new opportunities as they come to you. Not all of them will turn out great, but each one will definitely teach you a lesson about life. Continuously work to expand your knowledge and see where it takes you.

Tip 7: Become or stay debt-free

If you want to learn how to become independent, then make sure to start by allowing yourself to be debt-free. Money gives you the freedom to do what you want and be where you want to be as you work to expand your options. However, when you accumulate debt, it becomes a whole different story.

You lose control of your finances. Every move you make will revolve around the debt that you have. So to be self-reliant, you have to be free from any form of debt. The only kind of debt you need is the one you have to yourself.

Being emotionally self-reliant is not about being perfect. It is not about constant success. In truth, an emotionally-stable person is one who can admit defeat and one who could ask for help whenever it is needed. You need to be strong for yourself, but you need to be that inner honest person.

While a lot of help can come from outside yourself, the most important assistance is the kind that comes from inside. Others can tell you how good you are, but it is only you who can truly make yourself feel that you are enough.
